Internet Scams-Don’t Become an Easy Target

Sometimes, no matter how cautious you are, you may still find yourself the victim of a scammer, but don’t make it easy for them. There are many things that you can do to protect yourself from scammers, making their jobs much harder to do, and ensuring your financial security and safety.

One of the safest ways to protect yourself from online scams is to keep in mind that if you get an email or see a website with an offer that just sounds too good to be true, chances are it likely is. Many scammers know that people often fall down on their luck, and are likely looking for a way out, and they take advantage of that by sending offers that someone in a difficult position couldn’t resist, just so they can get their personal information. The best policy is that if you get an email from someone you don’t know, or are not affiliated with in any way, just hit delete and keep going.

If you have children at home, and you allow them to play on your computer that has internet access, you need to setup filters and passwords on your email and internet browsers, so that they can only visit the sites you approve in advance, and cannot send or receive email. A child just doesn’t fully understand the fact that there are bad people out there, and in their innocence, could very easily open the door for an internet scammer or predator to move in.

As tempting as it may be to use the same password on everything, just because it is easy to remember, you really should try not to do this. You should use different passwords, and remember to change them frequently, at least once every couple of months, just in case. If you use the same password for everything, and some kind of malicious software, such as a keylogger, gets downloaded onto your computer, then a scammer has all of the information they need to get into your bank accounts, credit cards, email, and anything else they choose to look at.

Install anti-virus and spyware software onto all the computers in your home, and make certain that you allow the programs to update as needed, and run at least once a week, more often if you do a lot of downloading. You can also get free programs that will filter out your email spam, which is a great way to avoid potentially dangerous emails as well. While some of these programs slow your computer down, and can be very annoying, it is important that you have them, to protect yourself and the security of your private information from internet scammers.

Protecting yourself from internet scammers isn’t that difficult, if you learn to practice good habits, and basic protection methods.
